Number: In 2015 it amounted to 295.4 thousand individuals. However, in May 2015, there was a mass death of the Betpakdalian saiga population (almost 80% of the population). The cause of death is considered to be pasteurellosis. Then the number began to increase again. According to the results of the 2019 air census, the total number of saigas in Kazakhstan amounted to 334,400 individuals, in 2023 - 1.2 million. individuals, and already in 2024, according to official data, 2.8 million. individuals.
Status.  
A species that is the object of hunting, as well as the number of which is subject to regulation.
Distribution.  
Saiga in Kazakhstan lives in Western Kazakhstan, in the interfluve of the Volga and the Urals, on Ustyurt – partly in Mangystau, as well as Aktobe and Atyrau regions. The largest population of saigas is Betpakdalinskaya, which lives in the territories of Karaganda, Akmola, Kostanay regions.
