Population: About 270 bears live in the Kazakh part of the Tien Shan, more than 350 individuals live on the territory of Zhongar-Alatau (Zhetysu Alatau).
Status.
Category III. The range and numbers are decreasing. It is also listed in the Red Books of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
Distribution.
The range of the subspecies covers the mountains of Central Asia – Tien Shan, Pamir Alai, Hindu Kush, Western Himalayas. Kazakhstan has the northern part of the subspecies range, which includes the Zhetysu Alatau and the Tianshan – Ketmen (Uzynkara) ridges, Terskei, Kungei, Ileysky, Kirghiz and Talas Alatau, Ugamsky ridge, Karzhantau. In the middle of the twentieth century, the bear disappeared in the Syrdarya Karatau.
