Population: Since 2020, between 1.88 thousand and 2 thousand pairs have nested in Kazakhstan. Globally, the number is estimated to be from 11.4 thousand to 13.4 thousand adults.

Status: A rare, endangered species declining in numbers (Category II).

Habitat: The coasts of Southern Europe, the reservoirs of Western Siberia, Asia Minor, some lakes of Mongolia and Xinjiang. In Kazakhstan, it breeds in the reservoirs of the Ural region, on the northern and northeastern coast of the Caspian Sea, in the Turgai hollow, the Naurzum Reserve, the Tengiz-Kurgaldzhinsky depression, the middle reaches of the Syrdarya, LakeBalkhash, in the deltas of the Ili, Tentek and Black Irtysh rivers.
