Population: Common, sometimes numerous species. In the Caspian Sea, it varies by region and season: in recent years, the autumn population ranges from 2,180 to 4,584 individuals, and the winter population ranges from 4,183 to 9,038 individuals, and, accordingly, should be higher throughout the entire reservoir of Kazakhstan. The global population of the species is estimated at more than 19 million individuals.
Status: Non-endangered game animal.
Habitat: In Kazakhstan, the mallard breeds and is observed in migration everywhere, including mountain lakes such as Markakol and lakes on the Jabagly ridge in the Talas Alatau. It winters in the south of the country, sometimes in the southeast near Almaty and on ice-free lakes near the village of Kulsary. In mild winters, mallardscan be observed in the Aral Sea off the island of Barsa-Kelmes. The species isfound annually on Lake Sorbulak and in the foothills of the Western Tien Shan, which indicates its wide distribution in various conditions.
